Upper Madison

The Upper is easily the toughest river in the area to do reports on.  One day we’ll hear great reports, one day bad.  On some days two different floats within a few miles of each other will fish completely differently then trade patterns with each other the next day.  When the Upper is good, it’s been very good.  Hoppers are really just getting started but there has been enough of them, spruce moths and other terrestrial to get the fish looking up on a pretty regular basis.  The most consistent dry fly fishing has been in the mornings and evenings.  Some days the bite will keep going into the afternoon, other days it never really gets going and even the nymphing is pretty poor.  We’re hoping that as more hoppers show up on the river, the dry fly fishing will become a bit more consistent, but it is the Upper Madison…
